Shelley Moore Capito campaigns in Ripley

RIPLEY – Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., paid a visit to Ripley during the course of her reelection campaign on Nov. 1.

The congresswoman arrived at McCoy’s Inn and Conference Center around 5:00 p.m. Saturday evening.

She was was greeted by cheering supporters with chants of “Send her back!”

Ripley Mayor Carolyn Rader called Capito “a great friend to all of West Virginia.”

“Jackson County knows me, I know Jackson County, and I know how Jackson Countians think,” said Capito, who is running for her fifth term in office.

Capito said that her campaign had been “barnstorming” in 18 counties across the state.

Laughing, she said that while she was attending a Boy Scout meeting in Kenna the previous night, one of the troop members - who had recently suffered a jellyfish sting - asked her if she had ever been “bitten” by one; she affirmed that yes, in fact, she had.

Capito expressed her support for Republican presidential candidate John McCain, calling him “a wonderful patriot”.

“He’s just a dynamic person,” she said. “Not afraid to express his opinion.”

Capito also praised local officials, including West Virginia Delegate Mitch Carmichael and Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney Shannon Baldwin, for their efforts.

“Carolyn, you do a great job as mayor,” she said of Mayor Rader. “I don’t know how the heck she does it.”

However, Capito was critical of the financial bailout plan recently passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush.

“It scares me,” she said. “It scares me as a policymaker, it scares me as a mother.”

Capito thanked those in attendance for their support, and encouraged them to take their enthusiasm to the polls on Election Day.

“Thank you all so much for taking time out of your Saturday [to see me],” she said. “Go get ‘em!”
